Healing what we can’t see - How your body can release your emotional pain
by Laurie Levine, Author of Spiritual Medicine

How can we heal what we feel but do not understand?

Have you ever noticed how emotions can affect how your body feels and how much energy you have?

How can we heal what we cannot see? This is a million dollar question.

Most of us live by what we can tangibly see and what makes logical sense to us. Our emotions and feelings do not always make logical sense to us and can feel more like they just get in the way and are a nuisance.

So many of us have been taught to have a stiff upper lip and if something bad happens just to move on and not to let ourselves get caught up in the feelings.

I have worked with so many people who have been through traumatic experiences whether it was an accident, illness, divorce or being fired from their job and they just carried on like nothing happened, because this is what they were taught and conditioned to do in their families. They were not taught to talk about it or to feel what was happening inside of them. It was easier to bury the pain inside and pretend it never happened.

The tragedy here is that when we are feeling trauma, upset, shock, fear, anger, grief, shame or sadness and do not express these feelings they get pushed down and embedded in our cellular structure. If this energy is not cleared and able to move we feel out of balance and this can lead to depression, fatigue, illness and disease. Over the past 25 years I have discovered how disease is an illness of the spirit and that the physical body heals when the emotional pain is released out of the tissues. When this happens there is a liberation of the spirit that takes place and we feel more alive and content again. It requires courage to face our fears and be willing to let go of the past and live fully in the present. An example of this is:

A woman came to see me because she was having trouble sleeping at night and having a lot of discomfort around her lower abdomen and lower back. We started to discuss what had been happening in her life and she was filled with so much fear and anxiety since her husband died and had a lot of fear around death and dying. Once she was able to acknowledge this connection between her fears and her body she was able to release the fears and began sleeping better and feeling more in control again.

What can you do to keep yourself healthier and release these emotions?

The first step is to be consciously aware of the impact that our emotions can have on our health and wellbeing. It is important to stop ourselves from shutting off from our feelings. Notice what is happening in your physical body and which parts are being affected.

Take the time to acknowledge what you are feeling and ask yourself what you need to address and to heal in order to move forward with greater vitality, ease and grace.

Give yourself permission to be open and honest with yourself no matter how painful it may feel. This will help you to take the necessary steps to feel the emotions and be able to release them from your mind and body.
